Maldives
The Maldives has undergone a remarkable recovery since the islands’
lively-hood was threatened by the Tsunami disaster in December 2004.
Perhaps the most famous tropical paradise in the world is home to
1,192 islands and their unique appeal has already seen visitor arrivals
back up to its pre-tsunami level at the beginning of 2006. With the
tourism industry booming again, the government is looking to
diversify the economy through industries such as fisheries and
perhaps most significantly of all making the Maldives into a leading
trade post between the East and the West. This guide looks at the
rebuilding and recovery in light of the tsunami disaster and focuses
in on the desire to diversify the economy without losing the
world-class appeal of the islands’ luxurious tourism attractions.
The need to improve social developments and infrastructure to
realise these goals will mean the Maldives is ripe for controlled
foreign investment. |
